More than 4,000 meals
Served Every day
Nearly 450 Sheltered
Every day - Rain or shine!
Throughout the year, staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army Bed & Bread program serve 520,000 pieces of fruit and snacks; 18,720 gallons of soup; 93,600 loaves of bread; 130,000 pounds of deli meat and 182,000 hot dogs. These modest meal items are often the only nourishment some individuals get for the entire day.
There are many people in the City of Detroit who are not able to travel to soup kitchens, so the Bed & Bread trucks bring the “soup kitchen” to them, a program that is unique to the Detroit area. No matter the weather conditions, the trucks travel 130 miles, making more than 50 stops on multiple routes, in Detroit’s most depressed areas, every day of the year.
The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s Bed & Bread Program serves nearly 1.5 million meals and provides more than 160,000 nights of shelter annually to men, women and children who would otherwise go without. The majority of those nearly 1.5 million meals are served directly from the Bed & Bread trucks.

It is not just donations that have an impact on the Bed & Bread program, it is the incredible volunteers who give their time to help those in need by making sandwiches, prepping meals and traveling with the trucks to serve Detroiters. Groups like Quicken Loans, Ford in the Community, churches of all faiths and individuals regularly donate their time to assist the Bed & Bread program.
Friends and partners who support The Salvation Army's mission make our work possible. We are 'Doing the Most Good.' And we are doing it together. The number one source of financial income for the Bed and Bread Program is our Annual Bed and Bread Club® Radiothon. This past February we were proud to partner with the following:
